Comedian Patton Oswalt is joining the cast of "Caprica," giving one more indication that the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel will look and feel a little different its predecessor.
Oswalt will have a recurring part in SyFy's drama series, which launches in January. He'll be playing a a popular comedian and talk-show host named Baxter Sarno, SyFy says.
It's tough to imagine Oswalt fitting into the "Galactica" universe, but less so for "Caprica," which is set 50 years before Cylon attacks on the 12 colonies. It will be a more character-driven show focusing on two families: the Graystones -- a powerful family headed by Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz), a computer genius and highly successful businessman -- and the Adamas, whose patriarch Joseph (Esai Morales) is an attorney with a hard-knock past.
Oswalt, an avowed sci-fi fan, voiced the lead character in Pixar's "Ratatouille" and co-starred in "The King of Queens." His credits also include "United States of Tara" and the indie film "Big Fan," which begins a limited release later this month
